Maternity pillows come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Since all women's bodies are different and each pregnancy is different, there is no one 'standard' that will work for everyone.

All maternity pillows are designed to do one thing: allow expecting mothers to rest more comfortably by relieving the pressure points from her body as she rests on her side. Pregnant women generally need to sleep on their sides. Sleeping on the back can be uncomfortable and also dangerous as the weight of the womb and baby presses on the woman's spine and inner organs. But flat surfaces pose problems for the contours of a woman's body. The solution? Why of course, the maternity pillow.

In particular, these pillows specially support the woman's lower back and belly, the two areas most vulnerable to strain when in the sleeping position. Three general categories of pillow designs have emerged to achieve this goal:

Wedge shaped pillows are just that, wedge shaped, and are usually foam filled. They can meant to be slid underneath the belly. This helps keep the weight of the belly from pulling on the back causing discomfort.

U-shaped or kidney-shaped half-body pillows can support the belly but also can be straddled between the legs so to prevent the twisting of the hips against the torso.

Full-length body pillows extend to the length of the body, and can appear like full length versions of the U-shaped pillows or as a J-shape. In addition to the U-shaped functions, full-length pillows reach to the head and arms so they can be fully hugged to support the body.

Maternity pillows can be filled with polyester or synthetic fiber (standard) or memory foam, though higher end versions can be found using hypo-allergenic goose down if you are looking for a softer, warmer and more luxurious feel. A good pillow will have an easily removable shell than can be thrown in the washer. It could be a good idea to get an extra shell or cover, as by their design, standard pillow cases cannot be substituted.
